In traditional irrigation controllers there's been the option to wire up a rain sensor to simply cut the common when it's wet, and control watering in that very simple way.
As technology moves forward there's more options for use of sensor information, and the new KRX controller gives you the option to have either 'normally open' or 'normally closed' sensors - then use the data to create watering delays that can be applied to specific zones in your irrigation set up.
In the example of a rain sensor, we consider this 'normally closed', after wiring the sensor to your controller (using SENS and comm) switch the toggle on the controller panel to N/C
- In the 'Zones' settings of the KRX controller in Holman Home, turn on the watering delay for any zones which you intend to control with the rain sensor - each zone can be opted in or out:
Here we have zone 1 and 4 using the delay:
- When the SENS Status is Activated this means the rain sensor is wet and you want to enable Use Watering Delay
- When the SENS Status is Not Activated this means the rain sensor is dry and you want to ensure Use Watering Delay is disabled
- For the rain sensor to work as intended, setup two Scene Automations as follows.
Firstly access scene via the bottom middle of the Holman Home home page:
If this is your first scene, tap the green 'create scene' button on the page, otherwise tap the '+' at the top right.
Select 'A device status changes' from the Create Scene menu.
Select the KRX controller from the menu
Select 'SENS status' from the function menu
Select 'On'
Now tap the '+' beside 'If'
Select 'A device status changes'
Select the KRX controller from the menu
Select 'Use Watering Delay' from the function menu
Select 'OFF'
Now tap the '+' beside 'Then'
Select 'Control Single Device'
Select the KRX controller from the menu
From the function menu tap 'Watering Delay' and use the slide to select the delay days (then save), then tap Use Watering Delay and select 'ON'
Tap 'Next' at the top right of the page
Tap the '+' beside 'Then'
Tap 'send notification' and then select 'Message Centre'
Tap 'Next' at the top right.
Now we can set the conditions - tap 'Validity Scope' and select 'When all conditions are met' by using the drop down menu under 'Validity When'. Change this to 'All conditions Are Met' and then hit 'Done' at the top right
You can now name the scene and save it to begin using it:
It is very important to have 'When all conditions are met' setup in this Automation.
The second automation is a quicker set up.
Select '+' at the top right of the 'Scene' page, select 'A device status changes'
Tap on the KRX controller
Tap on 'SENS Status' select 'Not Activated'
Tap the '+' beside 'Then'
Select 'Control Single Device', select the KRX controller
Select 'Use Watering Delay' from the function menu, select 'OFF'
Save and tap 'Next' at the top right
Tap the '+' beside 'Then', tap 'send notification' and then select 'Message Centre' and tap 'Next' at the top right.
Tap 'Validity Scope' and select 'When all conditions are met' by using the drop down menu under 'Validity When'. Change this to 'All conditions Are Met' and then hit 'Done' at the top right
Here is an example of this set of automations using a 15 day delay -
NOTE
- If you didn’t ever want to enable Use Watering Delay manually in the app, it would be best to update the “If KRX8 Sensor Not Activated, KRX8 Delay Off” Automation to include the 'Use Watering Delay status', however, ensure 'When all conditions are met' is setup otherwise it will result in an infinite loop.
In the example of a humidity sensor, we consider this 'normally open', so after wiring the sensor to your controller (using SENS and comm) switch the toggle on the controller panel to N/O
- In the 'Zones' settings of the KRX controller in Holman Home, turn on the watering delay for any zones which you intend to control with the humidity sensor - each zone can be opted in or out (refer to screen shots above)
- When the SENS Status is Activated this means the humidity sensor has reached the threshold % setting and you want to enable Use Watering Delay
- When the SENS Status is Not Activated this means the humidity sensor is below the threshold % setting and you want to ensure Use Watering Delay is disabled
- For the humidity sensor to work as intended, setup two Scene Automations as shown:
- It is very important to have When all conditions are met setup in the “If KRX8 Sensor Activated, KRX8 – 2 Day Delay” Automation
(refer to setting instructions above to set up these scenes)
NOTE
- If you didn’t ever want to enable Use Watering Delay manually in the app, it would be best to update the “If KRX8 Sensor Not Activated, KRX8 Delay Off” Automation to include the 'Use Watering Delay' status, however, ensure 'When all conditions are met' is setup otherwise it will result in an infinite loop.
