Your new Holman Self-Watering Planter Pot has a built-in reservoir in the base of the pot - this allows the plant to have some additional water to hand when it needs it.
Your planter will have a base that features little indents that go into the water reservoir, this is how your plant will be able to access the additional water:
Please note: No fabric wicks or geo textiles are needed - the potting mix making contact with the water creates a capillary system drawing water up as it's needed. Your plant can eventually grow down into this area and access this water directly.
Top tips:
- You can water from the top (like normal) or use the drainage hole to simply top up the reservoir, depending on your plants needs.
- Make sure you're not drowning plants which don't like being constantly wet - consider tipping the pot to drain some of the water.
- Use the highest quality potting mix (look for the Australian Standard mark) you can afford, which is suited for your plants. Avoid using garden soil as it can become very dense and boggy in these pots.
Caution: Remember that not all plants like 'wet feet' and you should consider this when selecting the right pot for your plant. If using a self watering pot, when it is time to water, tipping the planter allowing some water to drain away can help to reduce the water in the reservoir.
